The Emperador Guillermo River: Discovering Our Corner of Patagonia
In the Aysén Region, some rivers are known far beyond Chile. The Simpson, Mañihuales, and Baker frequently come up when talking about fly fishing in Patagonia.
But among the forests and mountains of northern Aysén flows a smaller, lesser-known river that holds a very special meaning for us: the Emperador Guillermo River.
And it is right along its waters that Wildfly Patagonia is beginning to take shape.
A River in the Heart of Aysén
The Emperador Guillermo River begins in the Andes and flows for approximately 46 kilometers (29 miles) before meeting the Mañihuales River, forming part of the larger Aysén River basin.
Unlike some of Patagonia’s larger rivers, its smaller scale offers a more intimate experience. The river winds through a landscape of fields, forests, and mountains, with sections that can be explored on foot while experiencing a quieter side of Patagonia.
Fly Fishing the Emperador Guillermo River
The Emperador Guillermo is one of the rivers used for fly fishing in Aysén, with both brown trout and rainbow trout found in its waters.
Its characteristics allow anglers to explore different sections by walking and wading, searching pools, currents, and smaller pockets of water where trout find shelter.
And although it is far less internationally known than some of Patagonia’s famous rivers, it has an interesting place in fly-fishing history. In 2014, the Emperador Guillermo was one of the official venues for the World Masters Fly Fishing Championship held in Aysén, alongside rivers such as the Simpson and Mañihuales.
Our Place Along the River
For us, this is the most important part of its story.
Wildfly Patagonia will be located along the banks of the Emperador Guillermo River.
When we began searching for a place to bring our project to life, we wanted nature to be more than something our guests had to go out and find. We wanted it to be part of the experience from the moment they wake up.
The river, the mountains, and the landscape surrounding them are at the heart of what we envision for Wildfly: a place where fishing will be an important part of the experience, but where there will also be time to explore, photograph, hike, or simply enjoy the quiet of Patagonia.
We are still building this story. Every visit to the land and every new step forward brings us a little closer to sharing this place with the people who will one day make their way here.
A Place We Want to Protect
Having the river so close also comes with a responsibility.
We want to develop Wildfly Patagonia with respect for the environment, promoting responsible fishing practices and helping protect the landscape that makes this place so special.
Because, in the end, the story of Wildfly Patagonia begins right here: along the Emperador Guillermo River, in our little corner of Aysén.
